Volleyball
Founded: 2005

In its growth over the past three seasons the group has enlisted a variety of strategies to make the game competitive but not hostile. I think music is the secret. The ranks go from Powerball, top of the line players to A Aa B Bb and C where the newest recruits learn the best ways to improve. Clinics are throughout the year. There are Fall, Winter and Spring Sessions. The teams have moved from a community college campus where they were fairly invisible to a family sports facility. There folks are impressed by the level of play and often inquire about signing up. This is great public relations for us. All adults are welcomed. So far there is a great mix of ages, races, and sexes playing with a fervor that is Olympic style. A sanctioned tournament is put on at the every year attracting over thirty teams from across the U.S.A. and Canada.

Swimming
Founded: 1988

The Fins Aquatics Club is Philadelphia’s gay and lesbian masters swim team. We have an incredibly diverse membership because we welcome swimmers of all skill levels, ages, genders, and orientations. In 2008, over 50 of us competed in the International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics (IGLA) swim meet, about half of whom competed for the first time. Many Fins have set national masters records, IGLA records and have placed in the top ten in national masters rankings. We have a strong presence in the Philadelphia LGBTQ community. Since 1998, we have hosted an annual charity swim event to benefit local non-profit organizations. We are known as a fun and social group, and have won prizes in the Philly Gay Pride Parade.
