San Francisco Fog RFC

San Francisco, California
Rugby
Founded: 2000

One word describes why the San Francisco Fog is the year’s best gay sports group: transcendent. The Fog transcends ordinary success on the pitch–competing in our nation’s toughest amateur rugby union and finishing 2008 with 2 of the world’s top 12 gay rugby teams. And the Fog does more than just play rugby – we instill our sport’s values in at-risk youth, running a weekly rugby program for them in our city’s poorest neighborhood. In addition, we’re now developing community green space – a two-pitch athletic facility that will serve the needs of our team and many others. We are men, women, straight, bi, gay, young, old and everything in between. We are citizens. We are athletes. We are family.

Cheerleading
Founded: 2002

A potpourri of people – LGBTS doctors, designers, even an Olympic athlete — the cheerleaders and auxiliary of Cheer New York (aka, Cheer NY or CNY) are athletes for life, literally. In addition to cheering for other LGBT sports like soccer and swimming, and large-scale sporting events like the NYC Marathon and Sharks Women’s Professional Football team, CNY dazzles for dollars and saves lives from life-threatening illnesses with our “Cheer for Life” fund, as well as performing for people with disabilities, in recovery from substance abuse, and of course, attendees at all major NYC Pride events! From our pyramid’s pinnacle to our bases below, CNY’s the best gay-sports group of 2008 because of our community service and huge ones…smiles, that is!
