Yet still another study shows that attitudes toward gays in sports are improving. This one comes from Staffordshire University, an hour south of Manchester in England. The study asked 3,000 soccer fans and players how they feel about gays in soccer. Among other findings:

  • 90% Think the only thing that matters in football is how the player plays … not his sexual preferences
  • 93% Of fans think there is no place for homophobia in football
  • 60% Want gay players to “be brave” and come out

Of course, that means that 40% don’t want gay players to come out, but apparently the biggest reason given was that it’s viewed as a “private matter.”
