If you thought the NFL had bigotry problems, experts Down Under believe that Australian Rules Football suffers from racism, sexism and homophobia, and efforts to stamp out the bigotry have been too little, too late.

According to Fox Sports, delegates heard how Aboriginal players are still judged by their colour when in trouble; the AFL was slow to include women in club culture; and administrators failed to introduce programs to break down homophobia.

One expert spoke specifically about the homophobia:

Dr Caroline Symons from Victoria University says in Australia, gay people are most likely to exclude themselves from playing Australian Rules Football (AFL), because of their sexuality.

“Forty-two per cent reported suffering from verbal homophobia within the context of sport and half felt they needed to stay in the closet in their sporting involvement,” she said.
