Traveling in Germany with Dave Kopay it struck me how few young gay athletes today realize who he is and the impact he has had on our culture. After I returned from the Gay Games I thought about all the other people who have led the way for gays in sports but who get lost in our celebrity-driven culture. To that end, we are starting a series of unsung gay-sports pioneers.
The first in the series is Roger Brigham, whose impact has been felt in the sports media, gay-sports organizations and reaching high school athletes both gay and straight. His trailblazing has spanned 30 years, all amidst major health concerns. He's an amazing guy with an inspiring story.
