British Olympic diver Tom Daley today posted a personal video talking about a new relationship with another guy, essentially coming out as bisexual. In the video (below) he says he has been concerned with how some of his words have been twisted in the media lately and that he wants to live life honestly.
Come spring this year, my life changed. Massively. When I met someone and it made me feel so happy, so safe. Everything just feels great. That someone is a guy. And it did take me by surprise a little bit. It was always in the back of my head that something like that could happen, but it wasn't until spring this year that something clicked. It felt right.
Many gays will say "well duh." Because he's an attractive white diver, there isn't an athlete I've heard more about from my gay friends than Daley. But every coming out is significant not just because of how it affects the life of the person, but also because each fan is affected in some special way by that celebrity. It's great that Tom has figured this all out, and with his Olympic training rigors, before he turns 20.
Of course, some will say that this is just another step toward Daley being gay. Maybe it is. But who cares. He still "fancies girls" and is now dating a guy. Wherever his journey takes him, we wish him nothing but the best and all the happiness in the world.
In the video, he said he's headed to Houston for training in December. I hope the guys there show him some hospitality.
