WWE star wrestler Darren Young made a surprising, spur-of-the-moment revelation on Wednesday when he told a TMZ cameraman in Los Angeles International Airport that he's gay (watch the video below).
Look at me, you know? I'm a WWE superstar and, to be honest with you, I'll tell you right now, I'm gay. And I'm happy. Very happy. … I don't think it matters. Does it matter? Does it matter to you? Does it change what you think about me?
He said some people may not like it, but he's happy and that's all that really matters.
I'm hoping to be able to make a difference. It's very important to me that people understand that someone's sexual preference shouldn't really matter. It should be about the person.
He thinks he'll be treated the same by the WWE and the other wrestlers. John Cena expressed his support for Young:
I know Darren personally. Darren's a great guy. That's a very bold move for him. And congratulations for him for actually finally doing it.
WWE's Chris Kanyon came out publicly before committing suicide several years later. Other wrestling characters have been gay, but it's often been unclear if the wrestler himself was (like Sean Penn playing gay Harvey Milk).
Young is in Los Angeles for Summer Slam, the longstanding WWE blockbuster summer event. The 29-year-old from New Jersey has been wrestling for almost a dozen years.
Hat tip to Matthew Warren at Buffalo Rumblings.
