I know it's always depressing to read too much on Twitter when any big event happens, since the site has a fair number of racists, sexists, homophobes and all-around idiots. But I assumed Michael Sam getting an ESPY for coming out as an openly gay NFL draftee would be different. Wrong.
Below is just a sampling of some of the less-than-glowing praise for Sam getting the award. I realize many of these people have almost no followers but I did want to publicly shame them nonetheless.
Michael Sam is no hero,he's just a fag.

It's sickening that Michael Sam has his own segment because he is gay. The espys are for sports not for faggots
— Beau Burleson (@BurlesonBeau) July 17, 2014
I wish ESPN and the ESPYS didn't reward Michael Sam for being gay... It has nothing to do with sports, and it's disgusting to watch it.

#MichaelSam is a FAG! A fag disgrace to America! Normal men should quit football in protest! I couldn't be around him in the locker room!

@tfraser713 @dedmomd34 being gay in professional sports takes no courage these days, that's true for the yrs ago but now it's a fad, it's in

They wanna clown Tebow for having Bible verses on his face but PRAISE Michael Sam for being a fag. The Devil is smiling too hard right now.

I am so tired of being told how amazing these gay sports players, enough already.
— Garrett Coates (@coates1) July 17, 2014
This has nothing to do with sports. That's about a gay dude. Put it on lifetime
— Uday (@IamLegend804) July 17, 2014
I don't have a problem with gay people, but that nigga shouldn't have got an award for it in sports.
— Master Rufie (@Shleepin) July 17, 2014
Gay ppl in professional sports are praised as if they have some type of disability
— Steven_The_Realest (@Wilding4Respect) July 17, 2014
The whole #USMNT deserved the ESPY for courage. They did something that actually matters in sports. No one cares that Sam is gay.
— RKO (@Racalto_SK) July 17, 2014
It pisses me off how gay people are praised in today's sports society...and just about anywhere else.
— Brent Komlofske (@Komlofskee) July 17, 2014
It's crazy that being gay earns you a sports award nowadays....
— Benjamin Doyle (@benwdoyle) July 17, 2014
"Man being gay isn't hard. I would totally be gay if I could play pro sports and win awards for it." -every straight guy watching the Espys
— Taylor Ryan Haby (@snow2go) July 17, 2014
@NickNolen14 I turn on SportsCenter to watch sports not them talk about some gay dude
— Jacob Timmons (@jtimmons308) July 17, 2014
I will end on 2 final notes of sanity from these tweeters to get the
bad taste out of my mouth:
twitter gets so depressing whenever a gay athlete does something awesome, like how can sports fans know nothing of brotherhood

People don't realize that when they tweet "Go kill yourself you fag" at Michael Sam, they are the reason he deserves the Arthur Ashe award
