Magic Johnson has long been on the inclusive side of history when it comes to LGBT issues. When his son, EJ, came out publicly, Magic and his wife, Cookie, couldn't have been more supportive.
So when boxer Manny Pacquiao said gay people were "worse then animals," Magic wasn't having it. He posted on Twitter his plans to boycott any Pacquiao fights going forward.
I applaud Nike for terminating Manny Pacquiao's contract after his derogatory statements that gay people are worse than animals.— Earvin Magic Johnson (@MagicJohnson) February 18, 2016
Fans of all walks of life including gay fans supported May/Pac fight putting $100M in his pocket. I guess to him their money is still green.— Earvin Magic Johnson (@MagicJohnson) February 18, 2016
I won't be watching another one of Manny Pacquiao's fights.— Earvin Magic Johnson (@MagicJohnson) February 18, 2016
In 2008, Magic recorded robo-calls for the No On 8 campaign in California, which aimed to defeat a ballot measure that ultimately ended the right of same-sex couples to marry in the state.
