Michael Jordan has been known his entire career in basketball for avoiding social issues, often to the chagrin of his fans and detractors alike.
Replying to a request for statement from the Charlotte Observer, Jordan has finally weighed in on North Carolina's controversial HB2 bill that has both opened the door to discrimination against LGBT people and mandated discrimination against transgender people.
Jordan said in the statement, according to the Observer:
“As my organization has stated previously, the Charlotte Hornets and Hornets Sports & Entertainment are opposed to discrimination in any form, and we have always sought to provide an inclusive environment. As has been the case since the building opened, we will continue to ensure that all fans, players and employees feel welcome while at work or attending NBA games and events at Time Warner Cable Arena.”
While it's hardly a strong position, at least it's something. Jordan also didn't seem to address his personal position on the discriminatory law but spoke about what the Hornets do. Given that's where his power is in basketball today, it's certainly better than nothing.
