All month long, Outsports is revisiting key moments in gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer sports history as part of LGBTQ history month. Today, we revisit one of the most popular stories of 2018, and to date, our most viewed story of this year: the wedding of former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jeff Rohrer to Joshua Ross.
Outsports co-founder Cyd Zeigler wrote about the nuptials in November 2018, and noted their marriage is the first of any out gay ex-NFL player. Here’s how he told it:
Jeff Rohrer, the former Dallas Cowboys linebacker who came out publicly as gay last week, married his boyfriend, skin-care expert Joshua Ross, in a ceremony in Hollywood on Sunday.
“We’re the one for each other,” Rohrer told People. “It’s unexpected, but it’s undeniable. And people can see it when they’re around us. We’re in a good place now, and I’m thankful to not have to live in the shadows.”
The two had met at the popular West Hollywood restaurant and bar Tortilla Republic when Rohrer was still very much in the closet.
The wedding took place at Wattles Mansion, at the foot of the popular hiking area Runyon Canyon in Los Angeles.
As far as we know, Rohrer is the first publicly out gay former NFL player to be married to another man.
Congratulations to Rohrer and Ross, and we hope you have many years of happiness together. You can follow them on Instagram @joshuaandjeffrey.
Tomorrow — and every day in October — we’ll look back at another moment in LGBTQ sports history.
