Nuno Costa is a very busy man. The out gay CrossFit athlete and coach told Outsports he is taking the year off from the CrossFit Games, and took the entire month of February off from work, to focus on a bundle he’s caring for: a beautiful baby girl named Maria Antonieta.

Being a single dad “is hard!” Costa said during a brief phone interview from his home in San Diego, while Maria was taking a mid-afternoon nap.

As Gays With Kids first reported, Costa saved up for a surrogate, Alaina, who delivered two weeks early on the night of January 30th: “7lbs and 11 oz., 20 inches long,” he posted on Instagram. “She’s absolute perfection! Everyone is doing well — healthy and recovering from the most amazing past 24 hours.”

Costa said friends have asked him, “Do you want to have more kids?”

“I don’t know — not yet!” he said.

At three weeks old, Costa told Outsports Maria is healthy and doing well, and from the pictures he’s shared on Instagram she certainly is keeping an eye on her main man.

“You, watching her, watching me, watching you. Watch out. (Yeah I’m into other games right now),” he wrote to accompany a photo captioned, “Game Time!”

As Jim Buzinski wrote in Outsports in 2016, Costa won a gold medal in sprinting at the 2014 Gay Games, but it’s CrossFit where he really excels. At that time, he was believed to be the only openly gay male athlete to have competed in the CrossFit Games. His San Diego-based CrossFit Invictus team won the Affiliate Cup at the 2014 Reebok CrossFit Games.

Costa is a recovering cocaine addict and alcoholic who has been sober since 2007. He credits CrossFit with helping him stay on that path.

Although he’s been learning what it means to be a full-time single father, he has help from an au pair, so he has been able to continue to coach his online nutrition clients, and his online running clients. But next week, he is off to Puerto Vallarta to coach his first CrossFit seminar since Maria’s arrival. “She’ll be with me this time but not every time,” Costa said.

She’s already met her Grandpa Alvaro.

Costa re-grammed a gorgeous photo of himself cradling a sleeping Maria, taken by professional photographer Carrie Sandoval. The full series, which are copyrighted, can be seen by clicking here.

Costa has a Meal Train account set up for fans, friends and family to help both himself and Maria. Click here for details.
