Hello and welcome to On Deck Circle for today, Thursday, March 18, 2021.

Your need to read time today is under 2-minutes.

Today’s LGBTQ Sports History Highlight:

Frederick Arthur Stanley (1841-1908) was the 16th Earl of Derby and in 1886 he was named Baron Stanley of Preston and served as Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893.
Anthony Cirelli (71) of the Tampa Bay Lightning holds up the Stanley Cup for the fans on October 4, 2020 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

On this day in 1892, Lord Frederick Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada, presented the silver Dominion Challenge cup to an amateur ice hockey team in the Great White North. Pro hockey teams weren’t eligible until 1906. The Stanley Cup is believed to be the oldest existing trophy to be awarded to a professional sports franchise in North America. To this day, no NHL player has come out, and lifted the cup in celebration of victory, but one can only hope. As an aside, I think the cup’s nickname ought to be “Fred.”
