In answer to the question posed in the headline, “Who signed this?” I did, and so did Outsports. And on this Transgender Day of Visibility, we are in very good company.
Layshia Clarendon, Megan Rapinoe, Ali Krieger, and Ashlyn Harris are just four of the more than 465 superstars, everyday feminists — all female-identified as well as nonbinary — and organizations who answered GLAAD’s call to add their names. The letter is a response to what the LGBTQ rights organization calls “the hateful and discriminatory rhetoric and attacks facing trans people, especially trans women.”
The letter was the brainchild of activist and journalist Raquel Willis, the co-winner of our Outsports Triumph Award, The Crusaders. A GLAAD spokesperson confirmed Willis conceived of and led the effort.
The letter, according to GLAAD’s statement, “represents a clear and loud statement of solidarity between cisgender women, trans women, and feminist allies.”
Here’s what is says, in part:
“We all must fight against the unnecessary and unethical barriers placed on trans women and girls by lawmakers and those who co-opt the feminist label in the name of division and hatred. Our feminism must be unapologetically expansive so that we can leave the door open for future generations.”
This is the first letter from GLAAD specifically focused on support for trans women and girls, but not the organization’s first effort like this.
- In 2018, GLAAD and 5050by2020 organized an open letter signed by more than 45 advocacy organizations, talent agencies, and production companies, urging Hollywood to prioritize telling stories of transgender people and to involve transgender talent within the creative process.
- In December 2019, GLAAD, in partnership with the PrEP4All Collaboration and over 50 LGBTQ, HIV/AIDS, and public health organizations, released a public letter calling on Facebook to remove dangerous and misleading ads promoting misinformation about PrEP as a preventative measure against HIV.
You can read more about the letter by clicking here. Below, you’ll find the full list of names and the letter we signed. Trans women are women. Trans girls are girls. And this is just one way that I decided to be visible today.
