Today’s LGBTQ Sports History Highlight:
Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio? On this day in 1999, the Yankee Clipper went wherever it is we go when we die, if you believe in that kinda thing. And if you believe gossipmonger Nicki Swift and the British tabloid the Daily Mail, the famous Hollywood movie star DiMaggio married in 1954 was bisexual.
Marilyn Monroe, the slugger’s second wife, reportedly had affairs with her acting teacher and several actresses including Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marlene Dietrich. DiMaggio and Monroe wed on Jan. 14, 1954, and divorced in October, but his devotion to the late actress who died by overdose in 1962 was evident by the fact he sent roses three times a week to her crypt in the Westwood section of Los Angeles for the next 20 years.
