The NFL will match Carl Nassib’s $100,000 pledge to The Trevor Project, the league has shared with Outsports.

Nassib, who’s the first active NFL player in history to publicly come out as gay, highlighted The Trevor Project during his announcement.

“They’re the number one suicide-prevention service for LGBTQ youth in America and they’re truly doing incredible things,” Nassib said. “I’m very excited to be a part of it and help in any way that I can and I’m really pumped to see what the future holds.”

Nassib went on to say he came out to help create a more inclusive and compassionate culture. Though the Raiders lineman says he’s a private person, he understands the power of visibility.

The NFL says it’s matching Nassib’s donation in part to encourage others to help out. The NFL world has embraced Nassib, with teams and star players offering their congratulations. Nassib says he wouldn’t have been able to come out without the support of his teammates.

His coach at Penn State, James Franklin, has donated $10,000 to The Trevor Project.

The NFL has celebrated its LGBTQ fans throughout Pride Month, even turning its iconic shield rainbow for June. Shortly following Nassib’s announcement, commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement of support to Outsports:

“The NFL family is proud of Carl for courageously sharing his truth today. Representation matters. We share his hope that someday soon statements like his will no longer be newsworthy as we march toward full equality for the LGBTQ+ community. We wish Carl the best of luck this coming season.”

Carl Nassib is an openly gay active professional football player. And the NFL has his back. That’s awesome to see.
