Jason Collins has teamed up with Pride Socks to create a unique product in support of the Point Foundation.

In truth, this collaboration between the out gay NBA trailblazer and Pride Socks started well over a year ago, with a chance meeting at SXSW and Collins’ desire to help people in the LGBTQ community.

The design of the socks came from Collins’ roots in the Los Angeles area.

“We were talking about what I wanted to do, colors I wanted to incorporate, and I love palm trees being from Southern California,” he said.

Pride Socks founder Rachel Smith said Collins has been a dream to work with. And as she pointed out, that’s echoed by seemingly everyone who works with the NBA legend.

“He’s so wonderful and supportive,” Smith said. “Everyone has that same opinion of him.”

A portion of the sale of each pair of socks goes to support the Point Foundation. That organization supports LGBTQ students through mentoring, scholarships and other resources.

“If there’s anything about improving education and helping the younger generation I’m all for it,” Collins said. “And this seemed like a no-brainer.”

Collins first heard of Pride Socks when Smith’s partner approached him after a SXSW panel discussion. They hit it off, with Collins even attending the birthday party of their daughter.

“They’re helping good people and great organizations,” Collins said.

Collins has, since coming out in 2013, been a stalwart of the LGBTQ community’s efforts for inclusion. That has extended beyond sports and the NBA. It’s not surprise the Stanford grad would want to support LGBTQ students through the Point Foundation.
