Katie Sowers is on top again. And her gay twin sister, Liz Sowers, is still leading the way.
Katie, the former NFL coach who has found a home in women’s flag football, again was part of the Ottawa University national championship coaching staff led by Liz Sowers. Liz is the head coach, while Katie is the defensive coordinator.
That’s four straight national NAIA titles for the Sowers sisters.

‘One of the most important things is to be true to who you are,’ Katie Sowers says. She has broken a barrier in the NFL.

From Katie’s post about the championship, it seems the team’s championship may have been unexpected by some. “Against all odds, we turned doubt into dynasty,” she wrote on Instagram.
Yet Ottawa was absolutely dominant at the national tournament, which was held in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Over the course of four games, they outscored their opponents 114-25. Their closest game came in their national semifinal, an eight-point win over Warner (Fla.).
For her part, Liz is already looking ahead to next year.
“If you think Ottawa is done, think again,” Liz wrote on Instagram. “This legacy wasn’t started for nothing. That legacy will continue.”
The NAIA is the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Like the NCAA, it’s a national governing body for sports. Unlike the NCAA, it has sanctioned women’s flag football as a sport.
The Sowers sisters weren’t the only out trailblazers who participated in the national championship tournament. The officiating team included out NFL Replay Assistant Desiree Abrams, who is also a leader in the national women’s flag football movement.
In addition to aiming for a five-peat, Katie is spending time in Italy where she is the head coach of the Italian national women’s flag football team. She inherited a team that last year was ranked 12th in the world.
As the sport expands both in America and around the globe, it will make its Summer Olympics debut in Los Angeles in 2028. It would be pretty cool if Katie were coaching. And don’t be surprised if she is coaching against Liz, who could easily be part of a coaching staff for Team USA.
