Justine Henin won her second U.S. Open and seventh major title this evening with an emphatic 6-1, 6-3 dismissal of Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Henin won the title without dropping a set, a remarkable accomplishment given that she had to defeat Serena and Venus Williams in succession just to reach the final. Henin, who also won the French Open in June, solidified her position as the number one woman in the world and player of the year.

Despite her two Grand Slam victories in 2007, the biggest accomplishment for Henin this year has been a reconciliation with her long-estranged family. The reunion has softened her image off-court and given her already beautiful game a relaxed feel on the court as well. Congratulations are certainly in order. —Wyman Meers
