The Willamette University Bearcats stunned the Linfield College Wildcats Saturday, 31-28, in one of the biggest upsets in college football this season. Linfield was ranked No. 5 in the nation in Div. III and hosted the game. It was the first loss for Linfield in the lat 42 regular season games, dating back to 2008. Willamette was 4-2 this season coming into the game.
Conner Mertens, the Willamette place kicker who came out publicly earlier this year, supplied the difference-making field goal late in the first half.
Mertens celebrated the big win on Twitter:
Linfield is 5th in the nation. We are unranked. A win in their house. 31...28....so surreal right now.

Had a field goal and a tackle today even though the team did all the work, that 31-28 scoreline makes me look good #ItsAKickerThing
