A high school boys basketball program is teaming up with a local college in New York to present a unique LGBT event in January.

Dubbed “Pride On The Court,” a Jan. 20 double-header just north of New York City will feature Div. III Sarah Lawrence College and local powerhouse Saunders High School, coached by Anthony Nicodemo.

The Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball team will play against Purchase College at 3pm, followed by a tilt between local Saunders High School and Somers High School. All proceeds for the event will go to the Hudson Valley Chapter of GLSEN. The event is being supported by Nike’s BeTrue campaign.

The weekend will also feature a luncheon designed to introduce team leaders to LGBT inclusion efforts, bringing together sports captains and Gay-Straight Alliances. Former NBA player Jason Collins will participate in the events, as well as DJ Zeke Thomas, who is the openly gay son of NBA legend Isiah Thomas.

“Being able to host this event with the support of Nike means so much,” Nicodemo told Outsports. “As leaders in the community, having players interact with GSAs will help bridge some gaps. Plus, having Jason, Zeke and others participate will make it one of the premier LGBT-pride sports events in the country.”

Nicodemo came out publicly in 2013 and has been unabashed in his support for the LGBT community ever since. He is also a very well-respected high school basketball coach in Yonkers.
