Challenges and triumphs of out women in sports to be highlighted at Outsports Pride

Outsports Pride Summit will feature the voices of out women on June 7, the day the Women’s World Cup begins.

Joanna Lohman, Christina Rivera, Julie Shaw and Haley Videckis will share their journeys as out women in sports with Sky Sports editor Jon Holmes at Outsports Pride Summit, being hosted at UCLA on June 7.

Women from various corners of sports will share their journeys at next month’s Outsports Pride Summit in Los Angeles, bringing attention to the continued struggles, as well as the inspiring victories, so many LGBTQ women experience in the sports world.

While women’s voices will be highlighted through the Outsports Pride Summit, being held at UCLA’s historic Pauley Pavilion on June 7, one panel discussion will specifically focus on “The challenges and triumphs of being an out woman in sport.” Fittingly, the conversation will taking place during the first day of the Women’s World Cup.

The voices highlighted on the panel will include:

  • Joanna Lohman, professional soccer player & Define Your Beauty instructor
  • Christina Rivera, Sr. Associate Athletic Director, UCLA
  • Julie Shaw, basketball coach and LA Clippers youth basketball coordinator
  • Haley Videckis, former college basketball player

The moderator of the conversation will be Sky Sports editor Jon Holmes.

The Women’s World Cup will feature various out LGBTQ players, including Americans Megan Rapinoe, Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris. While the number of out women in pro sports far exceeds the number of out men in pro sports, women continue to face unique challenges that keep some fearful of sharing their true selves publicly or even with teammates. This panel discussion will touch on all of those dynamics.

You can join us for this conversation and more by registering for Outsports Pride, being held in Los Angeles June 6-9. The weekend features speakers, panels, social events, and even a field day at Dodger Stadium.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are the lead sponsor for the weekend. Other weekend partners include the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, GO! Athletes, Equality Coaching Alliance and HomeField Alliance. Inquiries about Outsports Pride can be directed to Cyd Zeigler at cydzeiglerjr@gmail.com.
