Josh Cavallo, the out gay professional soccer player in Australia, surprised his boyfriend with a marriage proposal on the very soccer pitch where he plays.
The Adelaide United player got on one knee and a jewel-encrusted ring to his now-fiancé, Leighton Morrell.
Cavallo praised the United for helping him pull off the special moment, which actually took place in January of this year.
“You have provided a safe space in football, one that I never in my dreams thought could ever be possible, and encouraged me to live everyday of my life authentically,” Cavallo wrote on Instagram. “It felt right to share this special moment on the pitch, where it all started.”

Cavallo came out publicly in 2021, becoming a trailblazer in both soccer and Australian sports. Today he is one of the few active publicly out gay professional soccer players. Over the last year he’s struggled with injury, including a year-long recovery from surgery.
We don’t know much about Morrell, other than his Instagram profile that says he’s an electrician who, yes, lives in Australia. We’re sure we’ll learn more about him in the coming months.
Though it’s not the first time Cavallo has shared his love for him.
