The New Jersey (soon to be Brooklyn) Nets have according to several sources filed a petition to change their name before their move in 2012. Now usually, a name change is something to help boost merchandise sales and force the loyal fans to re-buy all their team’s stuff. In this case though, chances are it’s just to rename the city part of their name, but it still has to be done 2 years in advance.
