Update: Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis are just two of the out LGBTQ players at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Kristie Mewis was the subject of tons of chatter from Outsports readers during the Tokyo Summer Olympics. No less than two dozen different people asked us to add the Team USA soccer player to our list of out athletes in Tokyo.

Yet when we asked them to send us a link to where it’s clear Mewis had either come out publicly or was clearly living life openly as an LGBTQ person, no one could find it. There were a couple of hints here or there, but it was so unclear that it lead me to write a piece about some athletes being intentionally vague about being LGBTQ or dating someone.

Thanks to Sam Kerr, we can now add Mewis to the list of out athletes.

On Sunday night, Kerr posted a photo of her and Mewis kissing, complete with heart emojis. Mewis responded with the same.

If that’s not clearly being open and public about their rumored relationship, nothing is.

Kerr was already clearly out. She played for Australia in the Tokyo Olympics, and she and Mewis actually played against one another for the bronze medal. Mewis and the USWNT took that match.

After the match, several photos of the two of them seemingly cuddling on the pitch made the rounds, prompting a ton of speculation that they were in fact dating.

Speculation confirmed.

Previous speculation had Mewis dating fellow soccer player Rachel Daly.

The two make for a great LGBTQ power couple in sports. Kerr plays for Chelsea F.C. in England, and Mewis plays for the Houston Dash in the NWSL. Each of them has represented their respective country on the international stage for over a decade.

So yes, dear readers, we now consider Mewis to be publicly out.
